Tempura batter

Mum painting
1/3 cup or so fine corn meal
almost 2/3 cup white wheat flour, Trader Joe's
a tablespoon or 2 of cornstarch to bring it up to a cup.
a teaspoon (5 ml) baking powder
1/4-1/2 tsp salt
Mix dry ingredients together.
in a flattish bowl, whisk 1 egg into 2/3 cup beer. It can be cheap, or you can use a strong beer and have the flavor be an element of the dish. I used Old Rasputin, and it was good.

Gently add in a bit of the dry mixture into the liquid at a time until you have a nice thick batter.

Use slices of vegetables, chunks of firm tofu with the water squeezed out, or whatever else you feel like frying. Heat up oil about 2 inches deep (5 cm), coat your food with batter, put it in, and watch the batter puff up and brown. Have a slotted spoon with a long handle to scoop out the food as it finishes.

OMG, this is sooo good. And I have enough leftovers for 2 more meals because tofu and potatoes in tempura is FILLING! ::food coma::

My Vimesishness showing through.

Quiz: What Kind of Liberal Are You?

My Liberal Identity

You are a Working Class Warrior, also known as a blue-collar Democrat. You believe that the little guy is getting screwed by conservative greed-mongers and corporate criminals, and you’re not going to take it anymore.

A lot of good answers, though.

Classes today

Mum painting
Allan and I presented our final projects to enthusiastic reception. I mean, they went over even better than I expected. We may do both of them again at the Black Box (dance student recital, informal but done in a nice theatrical setting), if I can get done with my math final in time.

We may have video. He messed mine up, though, so I have to see if we can rectify the problem or if we'd have to post it upside down.

Also, remember the mentally challenged classmate I mentioned? He missed a few classes and his partners for his final project had to do something on their own. He started to panic about flunking, and I said to him, "Did you ever play games like Tag or Red Light/Green Light? You could do something like that." That calmed him down and he told the teacher he'd lead the class in a game next time. I'm not sure if he'll quite have the idea of how to turn it into a dance-y sort of thing, but I think the class as a whole can help him if need be. At least he's not just giving up now.

The marine biology presentations were great, every single one of them. I don't think I've ever been in a class where the whole group was so enthusiastic. I'm sad it's almost over.

On the other hand, I had my last Education 80 class yesterday, and I'm so glad I never have to see them again. Yes. It was that bad.

Dark Shadows movie

Mum painting
So, Thursday, I'm thinking, wow, I'm caught up on homework, hubby isn't working this weekend after all, and wouldn't it be great to see some of our loved ones? But Elaine and Neil can't travel because he is recovering from pneumonia, and it's kind of late notice to ask anyone else. Lo! An instant message from my brother, asking if we've seen Avengers? yes. Dark Shadows? No. Would we like a study break? Does that mean you can come over this weekend?!?! Yes! He will come take us to Dark Shadows. Happiness ensues.

The movie changed a lot of details but kept important essentials intact. Turning Maggie Evans and Victoria Winters into one character (that's really not a spoiler, the first thing we see of her, she's deciding what name to use so we know that's what they are doing) is a brilliant way of simplifying unnecessary complexities. Michele Pfieffer is terrific as Elizabeth. David and Carolyn are more likable than in the series, and the others possibly a little less so, but for what's basically a popcorn flick, it doesn't matter.

Besides the crappy instructors, there had been issues with rude bureaucrats, and just feeling sick as all nasty.

Today, I woke up feeling better, dance class was a music circle with dancing inside, and I opened it up with this incredible inspired feeling. Like I was dancing with the gestalt spirit of the group. Everyone was sending emotional support and approval while I celebrated the sacred space. Then it developed into more normal dance experiences, but we had a lot of fun with lifts and things, turning instruments into props, etc.
Afterwards I reviewed the pronunciations of the names for my ancient marine reptiles presentation. And I had worried for days that my classmates would be resentful of being asked to come in on what could have been an optional day so I could do my presentation early. But, I was right about my choice of material! Big monster reptiles bring out the 5 year old paleontologist in everyone! People afterwards told me how much they loved it.
And Allan got us a free digital videocamera. One of his classmates found the one someone gave her wasn't compatible with her computer equipment, but it works fine for us so it's ours. Yay!

Sure, he tried to take over the Earth, but he's going to be great doing community service at the Asgard Daycare.

How I loathe my Education 80 instructors

Mum painting
I will dignify them with neither title of professor or teacher. They are merely people who give instructions, sometimes contradictory ones. They nagged at me to do my presentation today, even though I was sick and had had a crappy day already. Then acted astonished I was having coughing fits after telling them I was sick. Then let 2 other people go before me, even though I signed up first, because they didn't have the brains to boot up the computer ahead of time for those of us who'd done Powerpoint. they also let everyone else ramble all over the place but one interrupted me constantly, including once when I was trying to answer a question about the law of cosines that SHE asked. Why ask a math question and then tell me not to answer, even just to write down the formula since she was curious?
Then, when I pointed out I really shouldn't turn in my hours until June 1st,because I intended to keep plugging away at it, they told me to turn them in to a clerk-type only connected in the vaguest way to the class rather than email them a scanned PDF of it, which is what I thought they would consider best. They might as well tell me, "We don't really give a rat's ass. You could not turn it in for all we care, but if we said that, you'd have one less inconvenient chore to do, so we can't tell you not to bother."

Vimes is gonna go spare.

Those of you who are moms...

You have my admiration. I don't know how you manage.

Sure, I can work with a classroom of 30+ teenagers, improve a lesson plan, and tutor someone in a subject I haven't even taken after 3 hours sleep...

But OMflyingspaghettmonster, a couple of hours with a group of screaming, whining, chaotic 4th graders and I had to lie down most of the rest of the day. (Okay, so some of it is sun poisoning and some of it is very little sleep again, but young children are hell on a person who has sensory defensiveness to deal with. They were actually pretty sweet, but just the level of noise and motion exhausted me.

I just do better with older children, even if people think my cheerful, energetic teaching style is good for the younger ones. And it really amazes me how people can manage being the adult pretty much 24/7. ::pours drinks:: These are for you, moms.

So...

Mum painting
I've got the highest score so far in my Marine Biology class, my letter of recommendation from my classroom placement for my education class is just terrific, and I aced my last midterm in Discrete Math. In Marine Bio, I'm presenting my final report a week early so others will have more time for their presentations and it won't be a disaster if I go a bit over.
I think I'm going to keep my GPA up.

Had a thought re: the Avengers.

Mum painting
I haven't watched it yet, but it seems like everyone's talking about it.
And it just struck my that, in fanfic, I usually dislike pairings that aren't in character for the characters involved.
But with Loki-- I know enough Norse mythology to know that there is probably no pairing he wouldn't be game to try. He's kind of the Rule 34 of gods, if you know what I mean. :)
